SILHOUETTES

In the 18th century, silhouettes were popular alternative to costly portraits. The word took its name from the french controller general of finance, Etienne de Silhouette. During the Seven Years War against England, he tried to raise revenues by heavily taxing the wealthy. Victims of his high taxes complained and used the word silhouette to refer to their wealth being reduced to a mere shadow of what it once was.

With flooding in Manila, Philippines, I lamented over the shadow of what once a great, well-developed metro/city lately devastated by the typhoon Ondoy. A fellow Filipino now in Dubai blamed her fellowmen. She said that Filipinos living in Manila are sinners and worth to suffer the calamity. But after the violent reactions of her fellowmen, she claimed that her Facebook account was hacked. Oh well.

I complain every time there's a power interruption in our area. It is because there are lots of things I'd missed to do. But with the dark silhouette, I once appreciate the importance of candle and the beauty of the night.

I was lying on bed watching the moonlight while there was no electricity.

Has sorrow or suffering made your life feel like a dark silhouette of what it once was?

God's mercies are new every morning. He is compassionately working in your life for His glory and your blessing.

- Dennis Fisher

To see beyond earth's shadows, look to Him the light.

I've seen the beauty of silhouettes during those days of frequent power blackouts when I was still a student in the Philippines. Under the light of a candle, figures in the dark either look scary or sexy.

I like the 3rd photo very much. reducing the world to simple shapes helps us see don't you think...

Hi Redlan, I also like the third photo very much. It is beautiful, but more than the beauty you captured in print is the beauty of your words. Great post.

Thanks for orienting us about the history of silhouette. =) About the FB issue, it was reported that Dubai police verified that her account was actually hacked.

You could have done this assignment without a photo. Usually a photo can say it all - in this case, the words painted the photos for us. A beautiful combination.

I was saddened to hear about the tragedy in the Philippines. I hope things are returning to normal. You have a beautiful country full of many beautiful people.

Great silhouettes. The last one of the candle, particularly reminded me that silhouettes don't have to be dark against light...they can be light against dark. Why didn't I think of that!!

I loved the insight into the history of the word silhouette. It is amazing where words come from.

Your pictures were breath taking.

"A fellow Filipino now in Dubai blamed her fellowmen. She said that Filipinos living in Manila are sinners and worth to suffer the calamity."

How can she say such words when people are hurting. I hope she apologises.

Tragedies happen, the worst one can do to victims is to say hurtful things.

Can facebook be hacked? That is why i don't want face books.

Thanks for visiting.

Appreciated your photos, Redlan but liked your words just as much. We can all learn from the insight of others. Loved your candle.

Panay is always notorious for its brownouts. I hate it too.

So di ka din convinced kay Jacque Bermejo? Pareho tayo. I could easily say that someone hacked my account when everything gets out of hand. That's just the way it is.

Nice post, Redlan.
It may do us all some good to go without electricity once in a while!

I like the sun(rise or set?) with the trellis in the foreground. The candle shot is very cool!

actually I love it when electricity is out, everything is serene.

plus it will make your mind plunge into the darkness.

it's very relaxing, I love quiet times sometimes. It helps me clear out my mind.

and yes I do take candle shots as well it's on my deviantart ;)
