SILHOUETTES

In the 18th century, silhouettes were popular alternative to costly portraits. The word took its name from the french controller general of finance, Etienne de Silhouette. During the Seven Years War against England, he tried to raise revenues by heavily taxing the wealthy. Victims of his high taxes complained and used the word silhouette to refer to their wealth being reduced to a mere shadow of what it once was.

With flooding in Manila, Philippines, I lamented over the shadow of what once a great, well-developed metro/city lately devastated by the typhoon Ondoy. A fellow Filipino now in Dubai blamed her fellowmen. She said that Filipinos living in Manila are sinners and worth to suffer the calamity. But after the violent reactions of her fellowmen, she claimed that her Facebook account was hacked. Oh well.

I complain every time there's a power interruption in our area. It is because there are lots of things I'd missed to do. But with the dark silhouette, I once appreciate the importance of candle and the beauty of the night.

I was lying on bed watching the moonlight while there was no electricity.
