THE FAMOUS PASTEL OF CAMIGUIN

I first saw Camiguin Island in the movie of Gelli de Belen and Jomari Yllana sometime in 1990's as Camiguin the title itself of the movie. In July 2007, Quija movie starring Judy Ann Santos and Jolina Magdangal was primarily shot in the Camiguin Island. This island is famous for it's underwater sunken cemetery, submerged after a volcanic eruption of the Daan in 1871. The place is marked by a huge cross installed in 1982. Each year there is a Lanzones festival held in October. The festival is one of the more colorful events in the Philippines with a week of activities. 2009 will be the 30th Anniversary of the said festival.

My best friend Marigold had 5 day Christmas vacation in Camiguin Island with her husband. They just came back last December 29, 2008 and handed me some pasalubong. She always bring home some souvenir items for me wherever she goes.

I was surprised to see the famous Pastel of Camiguin which I just read from the travel mag that Dong Ho gave to me when he dropped by here in Iloilo City. I can't share you its sweetest instead I want to share to you the history of Pastel.

From prayers for just a hobby in December 1989 with Christmas bonus excess of her military husband's of 120 php only, Ella started the 3 dozens on January 8, 1990, peddled in the neighborhood until 1993, with only 1 helper.

The success grew unnoticed and gov't agencies' assistance like SAIL, DTI, DOST, DOT, DOLE came to sustain and strengthen the momentum. From primitive-like processing (manual), baking (using empty drum, coconut husk), molding (using empty milk cans) and so forth, gradually it has been mechanized to be the Camiguin's pride with 153 personnel, 4 branches and quite a number of dealers and outlets scattered in Manila, Davao, Cebu, Cotabato, Butuan, Iligan, Bukidnon and Bohol.

At present the once cottage industry is now a medium enterprise properly read with silent "J" (from Virgilio Jose AND Eleanor Poper), VjANDEP!

Now, I am waiting and excited at the same time to see the perfect shots of Lawstude during his stay in Camiguin.
