One of the most familiar forms of paper arts is ORIGAMI. It is debatable whether origami originated in Japan, Korea, or China. However, we do know that the Japanese were producing sophisticated forms some 1,200 years ago. The word itself is Japanese, from ori (to fold) and kami (paper). The popularity of the art died out until the 1930's when a young Japanese, Alcira Yoshizawa, began to develop new forms based on old designs. Unlike the traditional form which let the paper to be cut as well as folded, the newer forms demanded that all shapes be created from a single piece of paper using folds only. The popularity of the origami spread to the West and was confirmed by the publication in 1956 of a British book called Paper Magic by the South African Robert Harbin.
This week art challenge in MIXED MEDIA CHALLENGE is "STARS". Check out my entry using ORIGAMI on my other blog. I dedicate my entry to the three birthday stars today!
